What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui translates to wind-water in English and it involves creating a flow and harmony between a person and their environment. It’s all about creating a place that feels energized and balanced. Next question you ask, how can I do this? Feng Shui involves rearranging your furniture and pieces in your home to optimize positive energy and good vibes. Let’s start off with tips on the basic principles of Feng Shui.

The 5 Key Elements

Feng Shui has 5 elements, which are Wood, Fire, Water, Earth and Metal.

  1. Wood: Represents new life and growth. Plants and wood furniture are a great way to include this element in your home.
  2. Fire: Represents passion and energy. To optimize your space with the fire element, use candles and the color red.
  3. Water: Is associated with wisdom and serenity. To add the water element to your home, include reflective surfaces, water features and items that are the color blue.
  4. Earth: Represents stability and security. To achieve the Earth element, we suggest including earth tone colors in your home. You may also include rocks and crystals.
  5. Metal: Represents focus, clarity and intelligence. Incorporate brassy tone and softer shades through furniture, cushions and artwork.

The Commanding Position

The commanding position is one of the basic principles in Feng Shui. The commanding position is the spot in a room that is the furthest from the door and not directly in line with it. Ensure that you can see the door from where you are positioned so as to be able to fully relax.

There is lots more to Feng Shui than you know, but we want to make it as simple as possible. Now that you are aware of some of the basic principles, Lifestyle Furniture will show you how to make your bedroom a zen, positive sleeping sanctuary.

Feng Shui Your Bedroom Benefits

Is there anything better than that feeling of having a great night's sleep? The main benefit of Feng Shui in your bedroom is more sleep. Getting more sleep will help improve your overall well-being. It may also improve your relationships, in Feng Shui, the bedroom is associated with love. Who doesn’t want more sleep and more love in their lives?

Tip 1: Position your bed

Place your bed frame in a command position, this means that you should be able to see your bedroom door without being directly in front of it. If you have the option, place it diagonally in relation to your door. It is important to avoid a door opening up onto any part of your bed. Ensure that there is equal space on both sides of your bed. If you have a bedside locker or bedside table, place one on either side for balance. According to Feng Shui, your bed should not be placed under a window, it should always be placed against the wall for safety and security.

Tip 2: Choose the right Headboard

It is important to have a headboard that is secure and stable. By having a solid headboard you are creating supportive energy. Attach your headboard to the bed to prevent it from wobbling and disturbing you while you sleep. Fabric bed frames or headboards can create a nice warm and inviting atmosphere. For Feng Shui, it is best to avoid headboards with bars and opt for ones with soft edges.

Tip 3: Clear the Clutter

A huge part of Feng Shui is having a clear space. By having too much clutter in your bedroom you are blocking good energy. It also will reduce our stress levels and give us a positive boost. Don’t forget to clear under your bed and your wardrobes. Even if certain pieces are not in plain sight, our energy can be affected by the overflow of clutter in our wardrobe and under our bed.

Tip 4: Calming Paint Colors

We spoke to the color experts in Crown paints to get expert advice on using the right paint colors for Feng Shui in your bedroom.

For bedrooms, chances are you'll want a tranquil space, so we especially love green and blues for this. In Feng Shui, Green is seen as a color of renewal, fresh energy, and vitality, so it's a very nourishing color that's very well suited to the bedroom.

Tip 5: Choose your Wall Art wisely

Be mindful when choosing the wall art for your bedroom. Choose artwork that is relaxing and uplifting. Once you have chosen the right wall art be sure to hang it higher on the wall. Artwork that is too low, is associated with low energy. Try placing it on the opposite wall to your bed frame. It will be the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning.

Tip 6: Avoid Electronics

A bedroom is a place where we go to sleep and relax. By having disruptors like phones, TVs, and computers you are interfering with your natural circadian rhythm. It is important that you clear your bedroom of all electronic interferences. When there are too many electronic devices in the bedroom it can totally zap your energy.

Tip 7: Remove Mirrors

Yes, you heard us, remove your mirrors from the bedroom, if you want to practice good Feng Shui. Mirrors that are placed on the opposite wall of your bed can bounce bad energy around the room. Keep your mirrors on the inside of your wardrobes.

Tip 8: Remove your Book Stacks

Too many books stacked in your bedroom can disturb your mind and distract you from sleeping. Certain books can disturb our relaxation, remove books associated with work, crime or thrillers. No need to toss the book on your bedside table just yet. Choose one book for your bedside table that brings positive energy.

By implementing Feng Shui in your bedroom, you can reinvigorate and re-energize your bedroom to make it feel and look so much better. By following these steps you create a refreshing and calming atmosphere. Not only will it benefit the look of your room but it may boost your mood and improve your sleep.
